It's one thing when someone like me reports the trends; what I'm writing is really only my opinion on what I see in stores and on runways. But when 7th on 6th tells you the trends, it's a fact. 7th on 6th is THE fashion event of every season. Sort of like Apparel Olympics in New York. Here were the winners for this season:
Bohemian Glamour - warm tones, loose unstructured clothes with earthy touches like embroidering and fraying, trimmed with fur and unfinished edges. Geometric Chic - Sometimes, patterns frighten me. This season, I have cause to be terrified. Exaggerated prints, like massive houndstooth, herringbone, checks, and more were everywhere. And usually several prints were mixed together. Hold me, I'm scared. Daring Necklines - Deep V-necks cut to the ribcage and below were all over the place. These are not for the timid, or well endowed. Leather Everywhere - Sure, we saw leather coats and jackets. But we also saw an enormous amount of leather pants, skirts, dresses, shirts, even leather draping details cut from delicate lambskin. Leather was so versatile on the runway, it was sometimes hard to tell the difference between leather and silk. Shimmer & Shine - From sequins and pailettes to silks and satins to lacquered leather and vinyls, high shine was all over the place. Sophisticated Retro - The cool elegance of the 40's and 50's made a huge showing this season. However, it's not picture perfect the way we remember of days gone by; it's slightly undone... it's human, and that's what makes it modern. Monochromatic Cool - One color, or variations of one color, from head to toe. Note: NOT BLACK. Don't be scared of wearing something bright (or bright-ish) for once. Relaxed Elegance - Sometimes, I don't want to get dressed up. This trend is perfect for those who think like me - casual separates that don't require any effort are very popular. Fur Trim - Going back to Bohemian Glamour, fur trims - from detachable fur collars to fur scarves to fur-lined coats - made a stylish return. Punk - I can't pull off the deconstructed punk circa 1980's style. If you can, you'll have a ball this season.
