Closet Reading List

There are more fashion magazines out there than shoes in my closet. Well, maybe I wouldn't go that far. But the fashion magazine market is just about flooded. If you picked every single one, you would go broke from newsstand and subscription rates. You would also be bored out of your mind. Out of all the magazines out there, only a few provide you with all the fashion news, trend reports, and fashion picks you need. So I've taken the liberty of scouring them all and picking the best for you. Here are my Fashion Rag Mag Awards.

Best of Show: Vogue

The magazine has been around since the late 1800's, and has set the standard for all other fashion magazines ever since. The back third of the magazine is always the best, with the Trend Report and Ten Most Wanted Items, it's a quick guide to what's hot in fashion now. The Fall Fashion Issue is the size of a phone book - mostly ads, which are also excellent idea-generators as well.

Best Alternative Fashion Magazine: Nylon

I love this magazine. First of all, every article and feature is actually interesting enough to read, not skim through. Secondly, the stylists there are geniuses. Most alternative fashion magazines I read are all about smudgy eyeliner and ripped T-shirts. This one actually takes style to another level.

Best High Fashion Magazine: tie between Vogue and Elle

I've already told you why I love Vogue. Elle is the other high fashion magazine I've been reading since, well, since I could read. While Elle may not be as large as Vogue, have been around as long, or have the same clout, it's well established in the fashion industry. Every month, it picks several pieces, colors, inspirations and collections to keep your eye on. It also has fashion spreads with models with a more realistic shape.

Best Practical Fashion Magazine: Marie Claire

Every single month, they feature hundreds of outfit ideas, clothing showcases, runway to reality interpretations (at a wide array of prices)and clothing that anyone could wear. The best part - when they tell you what to wear if you have wide hips, small chest, short legs, etc., they actually show models with wide hips, small chest, short legs, etc.

Best Beauty Trend magazine: Allure

There is no other magazine that comes close to this in the field of makeup, hair, and skin care. My favorite part is the regular column by legendary makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin.
