Fall Fashion Wish List - I Can Dream, Can't I?

Dear Santa,

I realize I haven't written to you in... ok, a very long time. The reason I am writing is that I am desperate, and need your help. The fall fashion season is rapidly approaching, and there are so many beautiful things to wear. I'd pray for them, but I figure why bother Heaven with these matters? And since this is your off season, and you don't really have anywhere to be until the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade... could you help a fashionista out?

1. Knee high leather boots. With a thin, four-inch heel (no clunky shoes for Karen). As you recall, I had a pair that served me well for three years until I tried to dance too hard at a club one night, and the heel broke off. Now is the time to get a new pair, because these are going to be the big shoes this season. As are closed-toe pumps with an ankle strap. And a thin, four-inch heel.

2. A well-tailored suit. What's my reward for losing fifteen pounds since last fall? All of my suits are dumpy and baggy now. I could just have them altered, but new clothes are much more fun. The August issue of Vogue had my favorites - the red MaxMara pantsuit on the cover, the gray wool charmeuse pantsuit from Helmut Lang. There's a breath-taking camel-colored wool pantsuit from Valentino, and I love the darkly conservative skirt suit from Jill Sander.

3. The Prada fur collar. My mom says it looks like a rodent strapped to your neck, but I love it. It's very chic, and it goes with everything in that "clashes, but in a good way" way.

4. The intelligence not to follow the 80's redux trend (just say no to padded shoulders, neon lace, and batwing sleeves) and to rejoice in the 40's revival (fishnets and tailoring and chignons, oh my!).

5. A floor-length coat. Sure, the three-quarters coat is still classic. But I gave a cheer when I saw a few maxi-length coats stroll down the runway. Now, I live in a city with a warm climate. There is not much need for a long coat. But I want one anyway, and will probably end up designing it myself. I don't dress according to weather, I dress according to mood and adapt my body temperature as needed.

6. Smaller hips. Come on, all these slim pencil skirts everywhere, I'm going to need them.

7. This magenta DKNY turtleneck sweater with cuffed sleeves I saw at Bloomingdale's. Chunky knits are still in.
