Breaking The Rules

Black and navy. White and cream. Gold and silver jewelry. White before Labor Day. To many, these are fashion taboos that are set in stone, never to be worn. There are just certain clothes and colors and styles that are never to be mixed or worn with certain things. These are the standard fashion rules. Until now. This season, get ready for fashion anarchy.

It's called the "new glamour", and it would make your mother gasp. Today's most fashionable women are mixing prints with more prints, vintage with designer and who knows what else, color with color upon color. It's an eclectic look, so to say. If you want to be current this season, don't break a sweat trying to match everything. Or anything, really. What used to look "pulled together" now looks boring. A few season ago, designers were trying to recapture that Golden Hollywood type of glamour, where everything looked picture perfect and airbrushed, from the clothes to the hair to the jewelry to the makeup. But anyone who has tried to pull it off knows it's a very hard look to maintain. And who has that kind of energy?

Today's glamour looks interesting. Eye-catching, even. Now, I'm not saying go out and throw together the loudest outfit you can with every tacky piece you can find. Instead, don't be afraid to throw on something different to compliment your outfit. A very fashionable friend of mine has started wearing leopard print or pink snakeskin belts with her slacks and jeans, regardless of whether or not it matches her top. And it clashes - but in a good way. Another has begun choosing jewelry and accessories that really make her wardrobe of black and gray stand out.

The idea is to stand apart from the colorless neutrals and classic outfits. The idea is to be fashion, and not fashion victim. It's time we stopped that mentality of trying to dress like everyone else, afraid to bring attention to our gorgeous selves. So my recommendation to you this week is to find at least one "fashion rule" that you've had stuck in your head and your closet... and try breaking it, just once. On purpose. With pride.
