Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour

The farm will be required to allow the animals’ sufficient space and access to means of expressing normal behaviour. The livestock must be permitted to socially interact and develop social groups.

A farm that wishes to become recognized will first need to determine if their facilities meet the requirements. They will also need to develop a veterinary health program as well as ensure herd health records are being kept. Once the preliminary requirements are completed an on site audit of the farm is carried out by an evaluator. The farm is then considered for membership or allowed 8 weeks time to meet outstanding requirements.

The RSPCA, Freedom Food is but one example of programs developed that consider the welfare of farm animals. Programs similar to Freedom Food exist in Canada and USA. The movement towards the general acceptance of organic foods has demonstrated that how food is produced matters. These programs are yet another means of assuring the consumer that some kind of concrete rules have been followed in the production of the food they eat. For many that provides not only them comfort but also the livestock.
