During a drought, many farmers decide to reduce numbers to combat the problem of inadequate feed and water. They may choose to sell nonessential animals or early wean some animals. A long-term solution may also include raising more drought-tolerant animals such as sheep and goats.

In order to keep up with the demand we have developed areas never meant for such intensive farming practices. Our solution up to now has been to use technology to combat nature. In the end, we must ultimately realize that there is a limit to our water resources and a limit to how many people and animals we can feed. National Drought Mitigation Center
