City Living, Rural Life

I say that we should respect and even embrace the farms. We have lost so many farms over the years it is almost to the point that they could be considered endangered. Does that mean we can let them all disappear? No! Does that mean we should banish the farm to somewhere else? No! If you answered yes to that one where would you like them to go? The Moon? The reality is that for all the complaining I encounter by people about farms I think to myself a few inescapable facts.

We all have to eat, and last time I checked over 90% of the population doesn't produce anything that we can eat. Most people couldn't farm even if they had some land. Remember, it wasn't that many years ago when over 90% of the population were farmers. People have simply forgotten. Finally, next time you are driving down that city street consider this. It took decades to produce the soil that was scrapped away to build that road and city. It will take almost as long to return the land to full productivity.

We have a limited number of farmers and a limited number of acres to grow food on. Both seem to be disappearing more and more each year. If you want to keep eating, maybe next time you feel a farm is something that should be "elsewhere", you will consider that.
