Review: Crossroads of Twilight by Robert Jordan


The Wheel of Time turns and the next book comes out. It has been close to three years, but book ten of the Wheel of Time series was published in January. Crossroads of Twilight by Robert Jordan went to the top of the New York Times Bestseller lists right away. Fans of the series waited a long time for this book. It continues the epic story of the Dragon Reborn as the final battle looms closer. The book moves the plot along, explores characters more in depth and provides new twists to the story.

Plots drive a Fantasy series to keep readers involved with the story. This book moves the plot along by adding some darker moments to it as things start to get worse before the final battle draws closer. All the characters continue their struggles from all over the continent. Perrin still pursues his captured wife in order to save her. He finds the captors, but confronts making a vital decision to get her back. Mat flees with his little entourage and future wife while trying to avoid capture from a large army. Rand feels a growing danger while he hides out after cleansing the male side of the power. Egwene continues to try to unite the White Tower and Elayne strives to keep her throne. Mr. Jordan manipulates the plot threads with expertise to keep readers hooked.

Exploring characters more in depth makes them more realistic which helps readers to be drawn further into he story. With the tenth book in the series, the characters have had plenty of time to grow and change. This book presents some new changes in characters. Rand still fights with his thoughts of going insane. Matt learns new things from a strong woman. Egwene acquires stronger leadership skills as she must deal with difficult adversaries in her group. Perrin discovers how for he is willing to go out of love for his wife. Other characters undergo interesting changes as well. The author gives readers deeper understanding of the characters through their actions and reactions.

Finally, a few new twists to the story will keep readers hooked for future books. The title implies that events are at a crossroads. Things are starting to turn toward worse conditions. The servants of the dark lord are infiltrated everywhere and poised to strike. The White Tower is split while the Aes Sedai fear the Black Tower's growing power. Most of the characters are in some kind of peril as intrigue abounds all over the continent. Mr. Jordan demonstrates his continued talent of keeping a story interesting for future books.
