The Mummy Returns :

The Summer movie season has started. Arriving first on the scene is The Mummy Returns" with a lot of action and special effects. It is a Fantasy film crossed with Adventure to give viewers a roller coaster ride like the first movie.

The movie starts in ancient Egypt, telling the tale of the Scorpion King and his pact with the Egyptian god Anubis. Then it jumps to 1933, where we find Evie and her husband Rick exploring a tomb. They find a golden scorpion bracelet that belonged to the Scorpion King, which grave robbers try to steal. They return to England with their son Alex. Young Alex puts on the bracelet and has visions of Egypt. The family is attacked by the grave robbers and mummy from the previous movie. Kidnapping Alex, the mummy and other villains return to Egypt pursued by Alex's parents.

What follows is a fast paced movie heavy with special effects. Viewers get to see the daunting army of Anubis, a transformed Scorpion King with pincers and a stinger, mummies, and other fantastical Egyptian creatures. The family keeps moving at a break neck pace to save their son and the world. These scenes are set against the spectacular scenery of Egypt.

Is the movie worth seeing for Fantasy fans? I say, yes, with qualifications. If you are just looking for entertainment, you will enjoy this movie. However, it might leave you feeling like you are in the middle of a video game. Everything happens so fast, the story of destiny, family love and bravery gets lost in all of the action scenes. So, enjoy this movie, but don't expect too much.

The River's Gift by Mercedes Lackey:

Mercedes Lackey gives readers a nice fairy tale story in The River's Gift. This is a short novel in a small hardback. Its likable characters and plot make this book a worthwhile read.

She slips away daily from her governess to go into the forest to help injured animals. One day she meets the kelpie Merod and removes an iron nail from his foot. Friendship blossoms between them.
