Realms of Fantasy is a bimonthly magazine edited by Shawna McCarthy. It is a full color Fantasy magazine with a blend of fiction and nonfiction. There are book reviews, articles on television and mythology, and Fantasy short stories. The February 2001 issue has some stories and articles that readers will enjoy.
Tanith Lee is an established author of powerful Fantasy works. Here she provides a Flat Earth story about 'The Man Who Stole the Moon." Jaqir is a thief of great renown. He is captured and makes a deal with the King for his life. The King sets Jaqir the impossible task of stealing the Moon. Jaqir gets help from a Drin named Yulba. The Drin are small Demons that are craft masters in metals. What follows is an entertaining story of magic and adventure told in descriptive words. "The Trickster's Wife" by Richard Parks gives us a story from Norse mythology. It tells the story of Loki's wife Sigyn. She spends hundreds of years catching the venom of the snake that drops on bound Loki and empties the bowl. Various Norse gods visit her to question her loyalty. They grow weary of waiting for Ragnarok. The author provides an interesting character with a difficult job. James Van Pelt's "Night Sweats" is a ghost story. Meadoe is a Japanese woman that buys a new house. She wakes up from sleep with night sweats. Her psychologist Joan tries to help her, but Meadoe must figure out the problem for herself. She learns about the history of the house and the tragic death of a teenage boy named Nathaniel who once lived there. The author writes a wonderful ghost story with subtle haunting and interesting characters. It is very good. "Breaking Spells" by M. Shayne Bell tells the story of three children. Their father is having an affair and their mother is upset all the time, making the children's lives miserable. They believe the father's mistress is a witch who has their father bespelled, so they try ways to break the spell. Bell gives readers a clever story of spell breaking and resourceful children. There are several nonfiction articles of interest in this issue too. The "Folkroots" article by Heinz Insu Fenkl talks about the link between the Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime and American TV. It has some interesting points. "Movies" by Marty Baumann talks about Steven King's books that have been made into movies. It is an interesting discussion about which of King's books have been successful translations to the screen. Lastly, the "Gallery" article is an interesting profile of Fantasy artist Terese Nielsen.
