Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan

Fans of Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" books wait patiently for each new book. When the books come out, they consistently show up on the NY Times Bestseller lists. The latest book Winter's Heart came out last month. It is the ninth book of the series. This latest addition is entertaining and moves the story along at a satisfying pace. It is an exciting installment to the series due to the characters, setting and themes.

This book picks up with the characters spread out all over the continent as usual. They face various struggles toward their appointed destinies. Perrin wishes to rescue his kidnapped wife while saddled with an insane fanatic. Mat, missing from the last book to fan's disappointment, recuperates from injuries and must deal with a Seachan princess. The Dragon Reborn, Rand al'Thor, travels around to get his would be assassins. He must settle things as the great war approaches. This book deepens the characters, bringing them more alive. They meet the challenges put against them at every turn.

Another important aspect of the book is the interplay of different cultures. They add to the book's suspense. Mr. Jordan is very inventive with his societies. All of the different nations have unique characteristics. Their differing customs help or hinder the characters throughout the book. The Seachan are interesting with their strict codes of life and methods of conquering. They are a serious threat to the main story.

Lastly, the themes of the book keep the story moving along. Love is a key theme. It binds many characters together, giving them strength through their struggles. Courage is another theme that weaves through the plot. Without it, many of the characters like Rand would cave in from the stress. The themes are what makes the book a worthwhile read.

Readers will find Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan an entertaining addition to the "Wheel of Time" series. The characters, setting and themes help the story move along in a gratifying way. This installment will relieve the criticisms lodged against the last book. Readers will find satisfying resolutions to many of the sub-plots in the series. Enjoy this book.
