Book Review: Harp of Winds by Maggie Furey

A few weeks ago I reviewed the first book of this Fantasy series. Harp of Winds by Maggie Furey is the second book in the "Artifacts of Power." It continues the story of the mage Aurian's and her companion's fight against evil mages. Like the first book, this one is full of nonstop action. It has a tight plot, good characters and fantastical cultures.

The tight plot keeps the this book moving at a fast pace, making it hard to put down. Harp of Winds picks up where the first left off. Aurian, her love Anvar and their companions are still stuck on the southern continent. A magic created winter is destroying the mountain kingdom of the winged people and many others. Aurian's pregnancy has taken her magic away. All of these elements blend into an excellent page turner.

Next, the well drawn characters keeps a reader involved. You feel for their suffering and want to see them succeed. Aurian continues to grow, faced with her love conflict and the tragic birth of her son. Anvar must survive his trial to gain the Harp of Winds and return to her. Raven, the young Queen of the Skyfolk, must suffer a terrible fate before starting her growth. Many other likable characters keep the book moving.

Lastly, the author's fantastical cultures helps the book's sense of wonder. There are the wonderful, loyal black cats that fight beside Aurian. Aerillia is the fragile mountain city of the Skyfolk, a race of winged humans. Then, there are the Xandim, a race of shape shifters that turn into horses. The characters travel through these many cultures gaining allies for the future battle and helping these different people with their problems.

Harp of Winds by Maggie Furey is a suspenseful adventure of Epic Fantasy. The tight plot, good characters and fantastic cultures make this book hard to put down. Ms. Furey is a creative author with a talent for writing books with a lot of action. Unfortunately, this is the second book of the series. It picks up where the first book ended, so a reader might find it hard to start with this book. Read them both.
