Animal fantasies have always been a part of the Fanasy genre. Many stories of talking animals and their lives have been written or done as movies like "Watership Down," "The Secret of NIMH," "The Wind in the Willows" and many others. Walt Disney's studio provides us this year with "Dinosaur," a story of a talking dinosaur and his life. This movie is an entertaining addition to the genre with its plot, special effects and Fantasy themes.

The movie begins with a lost dinosaur egg finding its way to an island where it hatches and is raised by lemurs. Alodar grows up to be a large dinosaur living a quiet life. His life changes when a meteor crashes into the sea, destroying the island and damaging the land. He and his surviving lemur family must find a new home. They join a herd of diverse surviving dinosaurs and go on a trek to find their new home. Along the way, they confront difficulties like large predatory carnivores following the herd. Many of the current scientific theories on dinosaur behavior and their meteor demise are used to give the story a realistic feel. This movie is helped by excellent special effects.

"Dinosaur" is done by a mixture of computer generated animation and live action real settings filmed around the world. The special efects give this movie a realistic feel of what life might have been like during the age of dinosaurs. Opening with a stunning sequence of the egg traveling through various mishaps, the movie proceeds along to more scenes in Alodar's life. Viewers are treated to computer images that move and talk realistically. This allows for an easy suspension of disbelief, allowing the viewer to get immersed in the movie.

Lastly, the Fantasy themes in this movie have something to say to children and adults. There is the quest theme as the dinosaurs search for a new home. It's a coming of age tale with Alodar growing from an inexperienced youngster to a fully mature adult and leader. Other morals are interspersed throughout the film. The themes give an added depth to the movie for adults to appreciate while children watch the dinosaurs.

"Dinosaur" is an entertaining movie that everyone can enjoy. Special effects give it a realistic feel while the plot is easy to follow. Fantasy themes of quests and coming of age add a mature depth to the movie. It is an interesting, nice addition to the realm of animal fantasiees. Hopefully, the success of this movie will encourage other film makers to attempt more works of Fantasy for this medium. Until then, go see this movie for nearly two hours of escapism into the world of dinosaurs.
