TV Series Review: The Others

NBC is trying out a new drama show about the supernatural. The Others debuted February 5, 2000 with its pilot episode. This series is about a group of psychics that help people contend with the parnormal. It has an interesting premise, believable characters and vivid plots that will keep viewers intrigued.

In the opening episode, the premise is introduced with a scary scene that will make the viewer jump. A young college student has the vision of a dead woman grabbing her from the bathtub. She meets a professor who introduces her to the Others group. They are psychics with different abilities ranging from an empath to a clairvoyant. Together they work on cases of the supernautural, like hauntings. The believable characters strengthens the premise.

Marian Kitt, the college student, is afraid of her power and tries to deny it. She is reluctant to work with the group. Mark Gabriel, the empath, tries to assure her of the group's good intentions and wants to help her. Elmer Greentree is the oldest member of the group and wants to teach her to use her power. The rest of the Others consists of a homeless man, a professional fortune teller, an irascible blind psychic and the professor of mythology and folklore who doesn't have any powers. They mesh into a strong unit that solves the vivid plots.

In addition to the mysterious death of the girl in the bathtub, the Others are trying to help an elderly woman with her haunting. This part of the story is protrayed with exciting special effects. Both parts of the plot are helped by excellent portrayals of the actors. There is a touch of human nature and humor that makes the episode watchable. The resloution of both subplots leaves the viewers wanting more.

Fantasy fans might enjoy this series. Future episodes promise more development of the various characters and interesting plots. The special effects, high production values, humor and characters will keep viewers intrigued. One minor complaint is a little too much sentimentality. If the producers can cut back on this a little and keep the scares and humor, it will help the series immensely. It is recommended for an hour of entertainment.
