Have you ever finished the last book in a Fantasy series and wanted more? Or, have you wanted to know about how a Fantasy world started? Readers now have a chance to answer these questions with some of their favorite series. Legends, edited by Robert Silverberg, is an anthology of short Fantasy novels. Mr. Silverberg has gathered eleven stories written in worlds created by some of the most popular Fantasy writers today. Each story either takes place before the main books as prequels, as a side story to the main series or just part of the history of the particular world.

The first story is "The Little Sisters of Eluria" by Stephen King. It takes place in King's Dark Tower world. Roland the Gunslinger comes to the deserted Western-like town of Eluria. He encounters a group of Nuns with horrific results. This novel is a blend of the Fantasy, Western and Horror genres. King's Roland character is realistic with flaws and a streak of decency. King blends his themes and plots to provide an excellent story of adventure and suspense.

Terry Pratchett's Fantasy world is called Discworld. His books are humorous satires that poke fun of many things. In "The Sea and Little Fishes," taciturn witch Granny Weatherwax is asked by fellow witches to keep out of the competition because she always wins. The novel moves along with lots of humor and fun characters. Readers will find this short novel entertaining if a bit light.

"Debt of Bones" by Terry Goodkind is a prequel to his Sword of Truth series. A young woman, Abby, goes to the head wizard to collect a debt to save her daughter, husband and people. Zedd, the head mage, refuses to help at first since he is dealing with a vicious war. The plot is tightly woven, full of intrigue and adventure. Goodkind presents believable characters with flaws. No one is completely good or evil. It is an entertaining story that enhances the series.

Orson Scott Card created an alternate early United States where magic works and the American Revolution was never fought. Alvin is a Maker who creates things with magic. He travels through the country learning to use his powers. In "Grinning Man," Alvin and his apprentice Arthur Stuart meet a quirky Davy Crockett. They come to a town where they try to stop a crooked miller from cheating his customers. Card tells a humorous lesson story with vivid language. He creates the believable setting of a frontier that never existed. This is an intersting addition to the Alvin Maker series.
