The Borders of Life is a contemporary fantasy novel by writer G.A. Kathryns. It is a novel with a mystery and about life and death. A realistic setting, excellent three dimensional characters and twisting plot gives readers a memorable story to think about for a long time.
Lee's Corners is a small town deep in Mississippi with an undercurent of mystery and strangeness. The atmosphere is calm and easy in the humid climate of the South. The author portrays the setting with rich descriptions of Southern culture. Overlaid is a fantastical garden that leads beyond the borders of life where past, present and future intermix. This realistic setting is populated by wonderful, unforgettable characters. Alma Montague returns home to Lee's Corners to die. She is a troubled elderly woman, full of despair, who wants to spend her last years in the family mansion. Not wanting entanglements with other people, the mysterious Mr. Dark gives her a key only she can see. This catapults her into some interesting entanglements indeed. Sophonsiba Gavin is a disturbed, rich woman afraid of age and decay. She has her house constantly redecorated and keeps young drifters as her own children until she notices they have become adults. Other minor characters make the story more realistic. Lindy Buck is a fantastically religious racist with stubborn one-mindedness. Anger Modestie sings people to Jesus. Marshall MacDonell is an honorable police officer who wants the truth. The Harlow's are troubled by the loss of their daughter and the fight for their grandson, Magic. Then, there is the enigmatic Mr. Dark who moves through everyone's lives. These characters revolve around a twisting plot of surprises. Alma and Sophonsiba Gavin circle around the mysterious death of Greta Harlow. Fantasy elements enter the story quietly, enhancing the plot with an air of weirdness. It is a search for hope, justice and vindication. Readers will keep turning the pages until the end. Readers will be stunned by The Borders of Life. After you finish the book, you will want to read it again to catch things you missed the first time. G.A. Kathryns is a writer to watch out for in the future.
