Sword and Sorceress XVI is a fantasy anthology
edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley. These anthologies have
been published for sixteen years and have given readers
many wonderful tales of female warriors and mages. In
this latest volume are stories by different authors of
entertaining fantasy worlds. I shall talk about a few of
the stories that readers will enjoy.
"The Changeless Room" by Charlotte Carlson tells the story of a young girl living in a cold region with her family. She discovers the doorway to the Changeless Room in her families's cellar in the dead of Winter. The tale continues on to a satisfying conclusion. This story has an interesting setting and valiant characters. One of the most powerful stories is "A Sister's Blood" by Patricia B. Cirone. In this story there are two captured sisters in a prison cell awaiting their fate. They have only one way of escape. The theme of love and sacrifice brings tears to your eyes. For those readers who like stories about unicorns, dragons and other fantastic creatures there is "Changed" by Lisa Deason. It is a story about these creatures trapped between half human and half their true forms by a mage. He forces the half creatures to perform in his circus. Celestra, a loner, wants her unicorn form back, hating humans, but is tricked. She learns about the value of friends in this good story. Readers of Historical Fantasy will enjoy "Honey from the Rock" by Dorothy J. Heydt. Cynthia is a sorceress living in the time between the Greek and Roman civilizations. She must help the goddess Artemis survive a strange illness. The author brings the period alive with excellent details. Another Historical Fantasy is "Daughter of the Bear" by Diana Paxson. This story tells about a female wise woman in the era of the Vikings using Norse mythology. This anthology has many other stories that readers will enjoy. Some of them are very good, some average and a few are not likeable. I highly recommend this anthology series having read them all. The stories are consistent and entertaining in all the anthologies. These books are full of interesting fantasy worlds. Until next week. Go To Page: 1
