Werehunter is a collection of short stories by Fantasy author Mercedes Lackey. She is best known for her "Heralds of Valdemar" books along with many others. Some of the stories in this collection are science fiction, but I'll cover the fantasy stories in this article. Ms. Lackey's stories are full of interesting characters and fantasy worlds.
"Werehunter," the story that gives the colletion its title, tells about Glenda, a girl from our world. She is on her last desperate legs. Without money, she has nothing left to keep her here. So she accepts the offer to travel to another world. There she discovers an ability to change into a leopard and finds a new life. This story takes place in Andre Norton's "Witchworld." A young man from a religious, oppressive society finds his destiny in "Stolen Silver." This story takes place in Ms. Lackey's "Heralds of Valdemar" world. In this story we get a cautionary tale of religious fanaticism and the need for tolerance. Alberich discovers that being different can get you killed. Readers will enjoy this story. Diana Tregarde is a witch. Andre LeBrel is her vampire partner. Mercedes Lackey's popular characters appear in two stories. "Satanic Verses" takes us to a Romance writer's convention where one writer conjures up a supernatural monster. Diane and Andre must defeat the creature to save everyone. The story has touches of humor. In "Nightside," Diane and Andre must fight another supernatural creature. This story is more serious. Two other stories take place in Victorian England in a school for children of expatriated British parents. "Grey" introduces us to a young girl called Sarah. She is parted from her parrot Grey in Africa and sent to the school. There she meets the orphaned street girl Nan. Together, with the help of the supernatural and Grey, they foil an attempt on thier lives. In "Grey's Ghost," the girls help the head school teacher's friend when she is being fooled by a false medium. Overall, this is an excellent collection of stories. The fantasy stories are good. Readers will find a treat in the science fiction stories too. This book is a great place to start for readers that haven't read any of Mercedes Lackey's books. This collection is entertaining and fun. Until next week. Go To Page: 1
