Anthologies are books of short stories usually centered around a theme. There are many fantasy anthologies being published now. A Dangerous Magic is a fantasy anthology edited by Denise Little. Its theme is about the magic of love in all of its aspects. Every anthology has stories that are good, bad or indifferent. In this review, I'm covering the stories I thought were the best and most entertaining for fantasy readers.
"At Eternity's Gate", by Gary A. Braunbeck, is a deeply moving story. We meet the main character, Lucinda, a dying artist. Her seizures bring her strange encounters with Vincent Van Gogh in imaginary settings. The art teacher and caretaker Jordan becomes frightened for her every time she has another seizure. This story is bitttersweet and memorable. Michelle West contributes the Dark Fantasy story "Sunrise", which is about vampires. Jessica is a vampire hunter with an extremely tragic past. She meets two other vampire hunters, Theo and Ambrose, who bring her some redemption to her life. The theme is about the healing power of love. An interesting theme for a story involving vampires. Another story readers would like is "The Man of Her Dreams", by Tim Waggoner. This humorous story is about having too much of a good thing. When Kristen's dream man comes to life, she quickly discovers how boring perfect love can be. "Legacy", by Roberta Gellis, is a story about Heulyn and her mysterious brother Hinin. They live under a curse from their insane father. Heulyn struggles with her ugliness, though she is intelligent and the ruler of her lands. She can only be freed from the curse by finding the right husband to give her what she most desires. Sir Jaie agrees to marry her as his legacy. This story is enjoyable. It demonstrates that love is not just skin deep. The stories in this book give a reader insights into the many aspects love can take. Fantasy readers will like this anthology, especially if they don't have time for longer books. This book can make you cry and think. Until next week. Keep reading. Go To Page: 1
