Fantasy Gift Ideas for Christmas 2004

© Debbie Ledesma

May the gifts of Fantasy and wonder be yours. Christmas is a magical time of year for many people. With Christmas coming soon, it is time for shopping for gifts. This article is devoted to providing some ideas for people who might have Fantasy fans on their list. There are many things to be found in the genre for those enthusiasts.

First of all there are books. Fantasy is a large genre filled with many different types of books for readers with different tastes. A book can be found for any taste from several different sub-genres. Some authors worth checking out are: Charles de Lint, Guy Gavriel Kay, Robert Jordan, Patricia McKillip, Mercedes Lackey, Terry Brooks, George R.R. Martin, Melanie Rawn, David Eddings, Andre Norton and many others. Fantasy tends to have many series too. Some series are in boxed sets for a more complete gift.

It is a long time between Harry Potter books for young people. Fortunately, there are many books for these impatient waiters that would make excellent gifts. Tamora Pierce writes exciting stories of young warriors and mages. Her Song of the Lioness series is an excellent place to begin. Diane Duane has a series of books about young people learning magic. So, You Want to Be a Wizard is the first book of this series. Other authors to check out are: C.S. Lewis, Brian Jacques, J.K. Rowling, Lloyd Alexander, Emily Drake, Madeline L'Engle, Ursula K. LeGuin and many others. A good site to check out is the publisher at: http://www.firebirdbooks.com

Another gift idea is a DVD or tape of a Fantasy movie. There are many to choose from for movie watchers. Of course there are the three Lord of the Rings movies: "Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King." The new versions with added scenes are very good. Some of the older movies like "Legend" and "Dragonslayer" can be entertaining. Christmas movies abound this time of year. Recently "Elf" became available on DVD. No Christmas should be without some version of "A Christmas Carol." "Willow" is an underrated film, but entertaining and made by George Lucas.

For role playing gamers and computer enthusiasts there are plenty of games available. A Dungeons and Dragons starter set or one based on other games can be found at almost every book or comic store. Many computer games have Fantasy themes as their base. There are too many kinds of games to cover here, but they are good ideas to look into for the game player aficionados in your life.
