A Great Day To Be Fan

© Peter DeYoung

What a day to be a sports fan. Despite 80-degree weather calling my name outside my front door, my television sucked me in and would not let go. From midday on, I was transfixed as I bounced from the NFL Draft, to the first place Cubs and Kerry Wood, to the NHL playoffs and day one of the NBA playoffs. Does it get any better? Some would day it does with the XFL’s Million Dollar game, but I will leave that one alone.

It never get old saying that the Cubs are in first place. As a die-hard fan for all of my 25 years, I was reluctant to jump for joy when they came out smoking to start the year. It is early, teams are just getting used to playing with one another, and the Cubs have the easiest schedule in April in the National League. But after watching today’s come from behind victory, I am now aboard the fast moving bandwagon. Kerry Wood is blowing guys away again and he did not walk a batter in seven innings of work and yet he is the only Cubs starter without a win. That tells you something. Jason Bere, Kevin Tapani, and Julian Tavarez have been down right nasty and words can’t describe the efforts of new closer Jeff Fassero. It has been a long few years for Chicago sports fans, so let us enjoy it while we can.

Switching gears to the NFL, it is nice to see Mel Kiper actually do some work. I mean what the hell does he do the other 364 days a year, watch film? That being said, his big board was pretty accurate as the first round developed. The San Diego Chargers shocked many by trading the first pick overall to the Falcons, but I think it was a great move. Michael Vick is a phenomenal talent, but he will not be ready to be an NFL quarterback for another two to three years. The Chargers and their staff could not wait that long. They took a chance that LaDanian Tomlinson would fall to five and he did exactly that. No team in the NFL can win without a quality back and Tomlinson will be great running the ball for the Bolts. They further helped themselves by snagging QB Drew Brees with the first pick of the second round. This kid can play, and he is the most polished passer in the draft. He might not have a cannon, but most receivers will tell you that accuracy is far more important. Other teams that helped themselves were the Seahawks, the Rams, and certainly the Falcons.
