Week One in Review

© Tim Janson

Week one of the NFL fantasy season is in the books and it’s time to review how my ranking’s from last week fared in their opening games.

Quarterbacks

Five of my top seven QB plays ranked among the top 10 in fantasy points in week one. Rich Gannon was just out of the top ten. Only Kurt Warner came up short with his poor performance against the Broncos. My top pick, Peyton Manning, had a great game with 211 yards passing, 3 TDs and no INTs.

My sleeper pick last week was Jay Fiedler and he did not disappoint, throwing for 207 yards and 3 TDs, and also no INTs.

Without a doubt the surprise QB of week one had to be Michael Vick, who looked incredibly poised and threw the ball well.

Running Backs

Onto the RBs, where five of my top seven picks placed in the league’s top 12 fantasy points in week one. The only ones who didn’t perform were the inconsistent Corey Dillon and Curtis Martin who was injured early in the first quarter.

Jamal Lewis was my sleeper pick and while he had a respectable game with 97 total yards, he did not score and thus provided little fantasy value.

Priest Holmes clearly showed that last season was no fluke as he was the top fantasy performer of week one with 122 yards and 4 TDs. Travis Henry was right behind with 149 yards and 3 TDs. And I’ll bet almost everyone had Henry on their bench for week one.

Wide Receivers

My WR picks were disappointing. Only two of my top six picks made it into the top 12 week one performers: David Boston and Rod Smith. While Marvin Harrison and Randy Moss both scored, their yards were very low. Marty Booker is another guy proving last year was no fluke and he picked right up where he left off with 198 yards and a score.

My sleeper pick was Chris Chambers who had a decent game with 36 yards and a TD.

Defenses

Not a good week on defense either as just 3 of my picks were among the top 10 defensive fantasy performers in week one. Green Bay, Baltimore, and Washington were big disappointments in week one.

Denver was my sleeper and performed fairly well with 3 sacks, an INT, and a fumble recovery.

Now some notes…

If there is one mistake that fantasy owners make every year, it’s dropping quality players if they don’t perform well in the first couple of weeks of the season. In the leagues I am in, I have already seen teams drop such solid players as Corey Dillon, Darrel Jackson, Jerome Bettis, Laveranues Coles, Miami’s defense, and Duce Staley.
