One-Catagory Booster Shots

This week, I'm going to look at some league leaders in single categories who aren't guys invited to play in Oakland last weekend. In other words, guys that an astute fantasy basketball trader might have a hope in Hades of getting in a strategic deal.

This time of year, rosters are being set for the stretch run and weaknesses and strengths can be found. You can also see the impact that just a few more steals or blocks could have on your position. These categories tend to be bunched in the middle and a small movement could yield those few points necessary to squeeze out a victory.

Here's a rundown on some less than household names who could help you tip the roto scales in your direction in a few of the vital categories without gutting the rest of your roster:

Assists (number is league rank in assist per game):

8. Mark Jackson - He doesn't score much anymore or do much of anything else thee days but he can still distribute the basketball.

12. Eric Snow - Anyone getting the rock to Allen Iverson is going to get assists, good thing for Eric that missed shots don't detract from your assist total.

16. Robert "Ice" Pack - One of these days, Robert's going to be healthy for a full season . . . yeah right. But if he gets healthy and claims the job, he might help. Advise only if completely desperate for assists. (NOTE: Make sure he's actually playing first!)

Steals (number is league rank in total steals for the year):

5. Ron Artest - Baby Bull already a master thief. To help yourself in steals, offer a "proven" veteran for the St. John's swingman.

7. Kendall Gill - Just not this "proven" veteran if you are trying to raise yourself in steals. Beware, Gill's attitude could find him buried deeper than Jimmy Hoffa in the Jersey swamps.

9. George Lynch - I would have never thunk it but there it is. Lynch gets steals. Maybe he's worth a roster spot after all.

Blocks (number represents league rank in total blocks for the year):

8. Bo Outlaw - I just hope you have Shaq and Iverson to make up for Bo's lack of scoring.

14. Tracy McGrady - If he qualifies at guard in your league, think about what this ranking means.

18. Ervin Johnson - Playing better lately, even getting some boards. Might be worth a shot to fill a glaring need.
