Lord of the Rings - The Movie

Jun 27, 2000 - © Evelyn Keys

A long time ago I memorized the rhyme at the beginning of 'The Lord of the Rings'. For months I walked around reciting it.

"One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them"

Tolkien was my own personal version of god. I still haven't read the Hobbit though. Remember that time honored rule we've all had drummed into us since grade school? "Don't judge a book by its cover." I didn't listen hard enough to that little warning. I'm still judging books by their covers. That's why I never read 'The Hobbit'. It was a little too cute for big ol' grownup me.

I've heard it's a great book. And it was written by my own personal deity, so it probably is. But I don't want to read it. I know the story now anyway, which was probably another stupid move on my behalf. What kind of person reads one of the most important fantasy series' out of order? That'd be me.

Despite my inability to plant myself on a seat and get stuck into the book that started it all. I love the 'Lord of the Rings'. In fact lets just say if it was possible I'd be saving up for a flat in Middle Earth right now. Great writers can do that. At the beginning of the third book - and don't worry I won't be giving any details away just in case your one of the few that haven't read the saga (but I'll have to wonder what you're doing here) - I sat there sobbing. I was 12, but I won't use that excuse I read the whole series again when I was 18, and I still found myself crying. It's the sign of a magnificent victory for a writer like Tolkien. He could breathe life into characters and make readers wish they had flat hairy feet, like any good hobbit.

Tolkien fans are many. If you thought there were lots of Star Wars fans (and don't even get me started on George Lucas - he's the man I'm least likely to promote to demi-god), then you'd be right in believing there's just as many if not more Tolkien fans. We just don't often dress up as our favorite characters and buy outrageously priced board games.

The movie. On the release of the 'Lord of the Rings' preview there were more hits and downloads of the preview than there was of the long awaited Box-Office Menace (or was that Phantom Menace?). There were many more fans though sitting on the fence - painful though that can sometimes be.
