Mailing Lists Available - Science Fiction and Fantasy

Jun 13, 2000 - © Evelyn Keys

Surfing the web has its downsides. There's the chance that you'll get caught up perusing something that was never really what you were looking for. Keywords typed in search engines don't necessarily bring up the results you were looking for. You want information that's easily accessible and you want your questions answered by someone who might actually care about the question you've asked.

Mailing lists are one of the best tools for finding information and discussing topics of interest. Not the type of mailing lists that commercial sites send you every few weeks to tell you about the specials they have on whatever product happens to be the product of the month. Mailing lists that provide you with hours of useful reading every week and provide you with a forum for discussing topics which you are actually interested in are out there.

Fantasy & Sci-fi lists abound on the Internet, and they're highly populated with fans that know what they're talking about. Debates get hot, questions are generally answered, and you can participate in discussions about all sorts of things.

If you've never tried out a mailing list you may not know what they are all about. A quick synopsis is in order. A number of people with common interests join and exchange emails with each other about topics. People on these lists engage in the discussions by reading and replying to emails. Your emails are public which means people can reply if they wish to do so.

If you're already a fan of mailing lists then great. If are interested in getting involved with some fantasy and science fiction list there's a wonderful resource out there for finding the sort of list you are interested in. http://www.egroups.com is a main directory of mailing lists that are out there. There are a huge number of topics available, more importantly there's plenty of science fiction and fantasy related mailing lists.

First things first sign up. All you need to do is have a valid email address to sign yourself up to egroups, and then you can hunt down and join any mailing lists that tickle your fancy.

Here's the list of mailing lists that are always vibrant and entertaining:

SFF- http://www.egroups.com/group/SFF

Seems to be an interesting list. They describe themselves, as a small list that loves to get involved with all sorts of discussion. They are indeed a small group with membership at around 25. The downside is you must request permission to join their ranks and to do that you have to give a bio of yourself. I'm hoping that I'll pass the test.
