The Seventh Heart

A world that blended real places with fantastical spirits is the setting for the action between humanity and mother nature in Marina Fitch's novel The Seventh Heart. It is an account of the transformation of the seemingly unexceptional Gillian into a woman of extraordinary skills and courage when confronted with the powers of the earth, ocean, water and wind. Gillian's new-found ability to communicate with the differently motivated elementals places her in a position to save the inhabitants of her community, if she can find the strength to take up the challenge.

It was obvious from the beginning that The Seventh Heart was a first-time novel for short story author Marina Fitch. Her story was inventive and captivating, her characters full of potential, and her world well built, but the book never developed. I found myself continuously looking for more between the shallow and barely matured plot and her characters who remained dormant. This is a terrific short story dressed-up as a novel.
