Another terrific novel from the Stephen Baxter, Ring is superbly structured around the universe that brought us Raft, Timelike Infinity, and Flux. This novel stands alone as the conclusion to the Xeelee plot, and references to the other novels are few and deftly woven into the story. Although this story closes the history of the Xeelee, the author assures us that there are "more tales left to be told...."
Ring is hard-core science fiction of the best kind. Complex technology, astrophysics and relativity theory, and adventure interspersed with the intricacies of sociological pressures and human interaction all combine for a fantastic story. The storyline centers around the voyage of the Northern traveling millions of years into the future over a subjective one thousand years. The planners, conceiving of the difficulties of a closed society trapped within a technological environment, built in redundancy to support the technology, but they could only guess at the evolution the societies aboard would encounter. Their guess barely touched upon reality. And so the adventure begins as the survivors race to save humanity from the evil Xeelee, only to find a new unexpected foe when they reach their timely destination. If this little bit peaks your interest try this excerpt.
