I was thrilled by the seamless weaving offered by Katharine Kerr and Mark Kreighbaum in their classic collaboration which produced Palace A Novel of the Pinch. The Pinch is a well developed universe rich with alien cultures, interesting technology, and political and religious intrigue.
I found myself slow to warm to the various characters, but as the plot built I was drawn into the events of the novel, and my empathy was tickled into action. Take a moment to read this excerpt from the prologue, a peak into the mind of the deadly assasin Vi-Kata, Lep. Or for another point of view, read an excerpt focusing on Vida L'Var, human. Just a taste of the potential depths of these characters. This is a book that left me eager for the next novel. I won't have long to wait. April 1998 is the scheduled release date of the second Pinch novel The Eyes of God, written solely by Mark Kreighbaum. Pinch is most definitely a universe with a depth of complexity that will last through many novels. And it's a very good thing that there is a second due soon. If you don't like loose ends, I suggest you hold off on reading Palace because it's loaded with unfinished threads.
