Jane Routley's very first novel, Mage Heart, is a Romantic Fantasy. It is a superb story, with many well-developed characters that suffers from being a first novel. It starts out strong, with a fast building plot and cast, and dwindles to a slow crawl by the middle of the book. In fact the book's flow is anything but smooth. The heroine's struggles to resolve her budding feelings of passion are shallow and entirely too clinical. An inner turmoil over her association with a prostitute quite overwhelms the plot, and the romantic subplot is entirely overdone.
A powerful mage, unaware of her abilities, and raised conservatively by her foster father, Dion is prematurely thrust from her academic world into a realm of intrigue, treachery, and emotion. She reluctantly agrees to serve and protect the Duke's mistress, Kitten Avignon, from an evil necromancer bent on revenge. Surrounded by brilliantly experienced role models and detestable villians, Dion slowly develops an awareness of her expanding boundaries, as she explores her new world.
