Ever wonder "what if"? That question has been the starting point for many marvelous speculative fiction works. This writing style uses a deliberate deviation from the known course of historical events. The deviation typically occurs at some pivotal point in history such as the outcome of a war or the assassination of a leading political figure.
In fact there are so many titles dealing with the alternative history subject that there is a site entirely devoted to keeping an annotated bibliography of novels, stories, essays and other material involving the "what ifs" of history. The site is called Uchronia: The Alternate History List. The site's author, Robert B. Schmunk, credits much of the site's content to the on-line science fiction community and other alternate history fans. The Sidewise Awards for Alternate History were conceived in 1995 and first awarded in 1996. The 1997 award nominations are currently being judged. There are many prolific authors within the subgenre of alternate histories. Some of the more well known include: Orson Scott Card, Phillip K. Dick, and Harry Turtledove. Personnally, my favorites include: William Gibson and Bruce Sterling ( The Difference Engine), Melissa Scott (A Choice of Destinies), and S.M. Stirling (Drakon).
