Driven by culture clash, The Gates of Twilight is a story of rich textures and subtle atmosphere. Paula Volsky blends the intrigues of a city caught between the pressures of change and the strength of tradition. Her world appears to be drawn from the history of India (Aveshq) oppressed by British (Vonahrish) rule. With this strong foundation she builds a fantasy tale that is remarkably robust. Volsky's style is captivating, see for yourself in this excerpt from chapter one of The Gates of Twilight.
Our hero, Renille vo Chaumelle, is a man with a knack for getting himself into, and out of, the most interesting predicaments. He is not an ordinary civil servent, he is a spy with a mission that will take him into the heart of the enemy camp to do battle with a god and his bloodthirsty followers. He loves the culture his Vonahrish kinsmen degrade, and his passion for the Aveshquian traditions will see him succeed where the lesser gods had failed. The many themes that pervade this novel encourage the reader to linger over the pages. This is definitely a book to read more than once.
