The Still

If you haven't read The Still by David Feintuch yet, don't! At the very least read this first.

It's not that The Still isn't worth reading, not in the least. It's a captivating story with wonderfully in depth and believable characters, including a protagonist who you can enjoy disliking. David Feintuch didn't stop with excellent characters, he gave them a well developed world with an intriguing mystery and a complex and unusually powerful plot. In fact, this has been one of the best books I've read this year.

Now you're wondering why I'm not brimming with eagerness to send you between the covers of this fantasy. Well, the awful truth is The Still isn't a stand-alone book, and David Feintuch doesn't seem enthusiastic about writing the sequel. Mr. Feintuch is most notable for his bestselling Seafort Saga, for which he was the 1996 winner of the John W. Campbell Best New Author Award. He's a self-proclaimed writer of science fiction, who seems to have dabbled in fantasy and decided he's not eager to return. Things wouldn't be so bad if he'd chosen to end The Still with some modicum of decent closure, but in that he failed us. Reader's of The Still are left with a cliffhanger and the biggest loose end that could ever be left dangling concerning the motive of a key supportive character!

So, now you know. If you think you can handle the suspense, both with the cliffhanging plot and the mystery of whether or not David Feintuch will ever write the sequel, then dive in to The Still it's on my list of best reads.
