A macabre scene, rich with detail and interspersed with the heroine's wry humor drew me into this novel by Holly Lisle, and the action kept me turning the pages. This was a "sit down and don't get up until it's finished" book, that had me poised on the edge of laughter and then spiraling to the brink of tears. Hunting the Corrigan's Blood is the story of Cadence Drake, a self-styled "Independent Reclamation Specialist", who has been hired to find a stolen ship. The ship, Corrigan's Blood, is a very special hypership with a unique drive that makes locating it a job for a specialist. Taking the job will lead Cadence and her partner, Badger, on a hunt across the universe and into the dark world of smugglers, killers, and the ultra-powerful.
The theory that space can be folded and ships can travel instantaneously across these folds is not new to the science fiction genre. Holly Lisle's explanation of the science of transfold navigation (TFN); however, is powerful. She presents life, not as three dimensional, but as encompassing space and time as well. Additionally, there are an infinite number of individual "yous" who make up a single meta-self that resides in hyperspace. The science of her universe builds upon these theories. Just like a paper can be folded using judicious applications of small amounts of energy to become a three-dimensional figure, an origami crane; so can space be folded using that same precise application of energy from all sides. Her science is compelling for its simplicity. Lisle approaches the scientific "gadgets" in her universe with the same simplicity. Where she falls short in technical embellishment she makes up for, twofold, in vivid scenes and character development. Her illustrative narrative is brilliant, take a peak at this first chapter of the book to judge for yourself. Her style of sardonic humor and detailed description pulled me through the story to a conclusion that left me sated. About this Book
