Doomsday Book

Connie Willis invested five years in writing Doomsday Book, but time is not the issue here. What Willis invested went well beyond the simple ticking of a clock, she poured into this novel an understanding of human frailties and strengths in its suffering struggles against evil. The human spirit is buttressed with the indomitable strength of hope, and Connie Willis has found a way to imbue the words of this novel with that strength.

Doomsday Book is the story of Kivrin, a simple student, who is on her first time traveling, on-site study. Her trip carried her to the fourteenth century and into the grip of the Black Death. Kivrin's careful preparations did not arm her with the weapons she needs to overcome superstition and fear, and she finds herself the object of hope in these times of darkest suspicion.

The crisis of the past has become a crisis of the now, and Kivrin's would be rescuers find themselves in their own struggle against the mindless ferocity of the plague. The tolling of the bells and the ringing of time and death's passage charged the story with a wicked pace. Connie Willis invested her time in a book that races with purpose. The action, the characters, and the wonderfully thought provoking vision of humanity's unyielding spirit lend this award winning novel a well deserved place on the "must read again shelf."
