Rise of a Merchant Prince is the second book of The Serpentwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist, that began with Shadow of a Dark Queen. When I finished the first book I was eager to find out what would happen next in the epic adventure of our heroes Erik Von Darkmoor and Rupert "Roo" Avery. These two friends had survived their first encounter with the monstrous Sauur, a race of fierce serpents, and had brought back warning of the impending invasion.
Book two of the saga, gives us a chance to catch our breath and get to know Roo, as he works toward the fulfillment of his dream, to find a merchant with a homely daughter and become a man of commerce. While Erik prepares for the imminent invasion by studying the art of war as a Corporal in the army, Roo plans to assist in more ways than just the use of his sword. This book chronicles his rise in power in the world of trade, as he lusts for riches and a beautiful woman. Second books are notoriously slow, often filled with character development and necessary background, but Raymond E. Feist successfully kept me avidly glued to the pages of this subsequent installment. Here is a "sneak peak". He has a rare ability to blend an adventure around the destinies of characters. Feist is a talent that can't be ignored.
