The Calgary Stampede is an annual event starting the second Friday of July and lasting ten days in Calgary, Alberta Canada. This event is advertised as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. This event includes rodeo and fair like activities such as rodeo competitions, grandstand events, midway rides, and midway games. However, the Stampede also has a huge variety of non-rodeo and fair like activities ranging from concerts, exhibits, technology shows, and hands on activities.
Much of the Stampede is tailored to family comfort and enjoyment. This is evidenced by the smallest details such as large washrooms with changing tables, lots of benches, and open areas as well as the shear numbers of open ended activities constantly going on at the Stampede. Furthermore, special discounts, free breakfasts, and particular days are dedicated to families, children, teens, and seniors. Moreover, the activities at the Stampede are suitable for all ages. For those families with small children there is a special kids area. This area includes midway rides for smaller children, under about ten years old. There is also a Buckaroos Tent with hands on activities such as puzzles, coloring, petting zoos, science challenges, and magic tricks. Children's entertainers such as Fred Penner, David & Judy, and Little Bear also provide shows specifically for younger children. These entertainers perform at the Coca Cola Stage. For older children and adults, various contemporary musicians and bands perform regularly at both the Coca Cola stage and at Nashville North. This years' entertainers include Sum 41, Finger Eleven, The Tea Party, Fefe Dobson, The Mavericks, Nelly Furtado, Simple Plan, Aaron Lines, Patricia Conroy, Jason McCoy, Charlie Major, Lisa Brokop, and many others. Outside the kids' area are activities suitable for older children. There is a more expansive midway filled with rides and games. There are also plenty of interactive and educational exhibits and demonstrations such as tours of the stables, sheep shearing demonstrations, pigeon racing, and a working television studio. Many of these activities allow hands on experience with pioneer activities, modern technology, and animal husbandry. Moreover, there are lots of stickers, pamphlets, and give aways for the kids. Another interactive area for kids is Mad Science. This area is filled with hands on science and technology exhibits. These exhibits include hands on science project like exhibits, interactive futuristic games, virtual technology, and movie making activities. There are also a number of demonstrations and competitions are scheduled each year at the Stampede. These presentations have a variety of different themes for different interests. For example, the BELL rodeo X includes various bike, skateboard, and roller blade trick demonstrations by professional trick riders. The Super Dogs is a demonstration and competition of various dog tricks, skills, and obstacle course runs. There are also competitions such as the World Stock Dog Competition, Blacksmith Competition, Supreme Champion Beef Cattle, and the Working Cow Horse Competition. Go To Page: 1 2
