Nutrition for "Back to School" Days!

FUN FOOD SUGGESTIONS!

Here are some tips on making lunchtime fun and nutritious.

  • Use interestingly shaped cookie cutters for sandwich art.
  • Cut up vegetable and fruit sticks to dip in flavored yoghurt
  • Instead of bread, use pita, whole grain crackers, pancakes, or soft tortillas for sandwiches
  • Individual packs of 100% fruit or vegetable juice, fruit bars, raisins, nuts, other dried fruits are convenient for lunch bags.
  • Children enjoy fresh fruits like apples, pears, grapes, bananas, peaches, plums.
  • Try packing the lunches in the evening, avoiding the morning rush and get the kids involved.
  • Make fruits and vegetables easy to eat. Peel the orange and section it so kids can pop it right into their mouths. Pack baby carrots and include dips.
  • Get your kids to make a list of their favorite healthy lunch choices. Keep this posted in the kitchen somewhere, where they can change their selections as their tastes vary.
  • For dessert, fill a baggie with pre-sweetened cereal or pack a frozen container of yogurt. The yogurt will keep other foods cool and be ready to eat by lunchtime.
