Newspaper obituaries are little distillations of the lives of individuals, and say much about our culture. We value individuals not just because they are a part of a larger group, but because of what they achieved, who they were, how they treated others. Our values may have changed a great deal over the centuries. What hasn’t changed is the idea that each person is important on his or her own. Each person matters, and should be remembered.
