Having A Halloween Of A Time© Cindy Ovard
Oct 16, 2001
The news article read "Will we ever get back to normal?" Of course we won't. What was commonplace normal two months ago will never be commonplace normal again, but our lives will go on and our families need to feel that commonplace bit of normalcy in their lives. Halloween decorations and being festive can bring that back to the family. It helps us as parents realize the need we have to our children that we must go on normally" while facing unknown futures. Life and our strength is in our families.
I have to admit, it was hard this year to get out the Halloween decorations. I wasn't in the mood to decorate my home in a festive mood. It's so odd for me to be that way because I'm usually the party mama. I had to take a step back and realize that by not being in the mood and not decorating for a very festive time of year I was putting a damper on my children's own lives. They are only young once and yes, Halloween may come every year, but each year brings new things and is important to my children's lives. There are many reasons I feel not in the mood to be festive, I'll admit one is slightly along the lines with the somber mood of the nation, but I believe the major reason I'm feeling this way is that due to our new home and the new areas that we have yet to discover where the decorations should go and what would look good where. I just don't feel like decorating a house that is not fully unpacked yet and not fully put together yet. PLUS I don't even know where my decorations are to begin with. But to keep in good spirits with my kids and also to let them know that life must go on with all the current events whirling around us, I must stay the course and be there for them even if for what some may seem a trivial holiday. It's the mundane, trivial things that keep us together. My daughter and I made a pact; I'd search the garage full of boxes for our decorations if she'd be the one who found the perfect spot for each one in the house. She was a school kid once again. The bright smile it brought to her face was enough for me to tear through the garage in hopes of finding just a glimmer of the two boxes labeled "Halloween Decor". It's the simple joys in their lives that make the memories.
