Making The Most Of It

Whew! Summer is on its downside and August rolled in with a slow burn. Well, actually it rolled in with a holler. It flew in with one of my children starting back to school on the lovely (did you hear the sarcasms dripping?) YRS system that our school district adopted for a few elementary schools in our area. YRS you question? Year Round School.

I won't throw a tantrum and make this my soapbox; I'll just rant for a second of having my children on different schedules. Ok! Enough said. But I will say that the YRS system really puts a crick in our summer plans. The kids were shipped off for three weeks of bliss and a summer to die for at the favorite Uncles farm in Idaho (Hero's in life) and just when they returned my son had to begin back to school. BUMMER! It's still light out when he goes to bed and my daughter isn't about to go to bed at 8:30 on her summer vacation. I can't blame her, I wouldn't either, and so what we are really trying to put across here is: Rolling with the punches and making the best of what's on our plate right now. Yes, there are pros and cons of the YRS, but whatever they are we have it now and we'll deal with it. I'm not a push over (hmmm, don't tell my kids that, I've got them snowed on that issue) but I do know what battles to fight and what battles are worth fighting for and this is NOT a battle I care to fight. I'd have to fight all the way to the California Supreme Court and beyond and I'm not about ready to leave my family in the dust for years on end to fight a battle that began years ago. MAN, by the time I'd get home my son (whom I was dearly fighting for) would be a college graduate and I'd see that YRS really didn't harm him. I'd be the one who harmed him by not being here for him when he really needed me.

My middle school aged daughter and I have actually found the time that dear little "burping, farting, laughing, talking with food in his mouth, lizard chasing" brother is gone to be our most rewarding time. We are having a blast as a mother and daughter team. We can go out to breakfast without the fear of wearing half our breakfast from "little brother" burping it out on to us AND we can have a conversation at "THE MALL" without "little brother" wanted to drag us into the TOY store or the donut shop or the pet store. We are having our girl moments and loving every minute of them while we shop till we drop.
