School Daze

Being on the move can put stress into any family. Not just being moved from one activity to another, but actually moving from one part of the country to another. Trying to take the stress out of moving has been a challenge, but it's actually being accomplished. "Let's just get on with it," I've said over and over again.

Once the decision was made regarding the house we found and fell in love with, the next big step was finding where the schools were for the children. What district were we to live in and what was the distances to the schools. Internet searching gave me a wealth of knowledge and I came away more prepared for that first day of school for my kids in their new digs. We drove to the schools and walked into the office to register. I wanted to make the transition as smooth as possible and I wanted my children to know that I supported them and wanted them to have a good first day of school in their town. Parental support can either make it or break it for the children.

The first day of school was a game. Timing us to see how long it took us to get to each school was fun. "On your mark, get set, GO!" and we were off out of the driveway. (of course, obeying all traffic rules and limits) Once at the school, we had a guessing game if their new teacher would be a man or a woman. Hey it's a 50/50 chance, can't go wrong there. WRONG! Very wrong, it could be both! Well, it made for fun laughs as we entered the office anyway. The next game was to decide what kind of lunch they'd eat and if they'd opt for sack lunch the next day. My guess was the cafeteria food until more friends were made. My son can't stand to eat in the cafeteria because the line is so long and it cuts into his lunch recess time. Oh, heaven forbid that he lose five minutes of precious recess time, but it's a joy of life for children, so I pack the sack lunch full of goodies with love.

Once the kids are tucked into school, I remind them the last game today will be; any homework on your first day. My daughter shakes her head, hoping somehow the teachers will get her message through osmosis and won't send homework home. I think she's going to lose this one! And last but not least, we decide where the pick up point will be. True to my word I'm there at the end of day and pick them up with smiles on their faces.
