Sitting across the table from another family member can bring tears (Johnny's looking at me!) or it can bring laughter (google eyes works for us). But while trying to read to your family can be frustrating if not down right boring for the everyone. Why do we have to read as a family? It helps children see how to read and where to put emphasis on certain words or where they can stop and ask questions about what is unfamiliar to them.
We sat around as a family reading American History the other night. It was interesting to see the eyes roll back into the heads of our children as we began to discuss what American History was all about. History is fasinating and I want my children to catch my passion for it. I want to make it fun for them. Pop quizzes work well for pre teens and teenagers. The quizzes can hold thier interests a little bit longer than just droning on and on while you read and they fall asleep. Stop to ask questions and stop to discuss a certain point with them. Let your first grader who is just beginning to read read a few paragraphs. Have your teenagers help with the discussions and let them give thier points of view. It will be very enlightening for you to see what their perspective is on the whole issue of history and it might just help you see some areas you might want to work on with your family discussions. American Presidents can be fun to learn about. They were and are real people, just like you. Begin with a quiz to see who might know what about each president. Hold pictures up to see if anyone can recognize which American President it is. You'll be amazed at the amount of learning you'll do as a parent while teaching your children. As a parents allow yourself to ability to learn as you teach your children. It's fun and interesting to open their eyes while you are opening up your own. It also allows your children to see that even you aren't afriad to learn even while you are old. Learn and grow with you children and have family fun while you are all together. Reading American history can put the finishing touches on your family as you come to know more about that great nation. After you done with that history lesson pick up the history books and begin with another nation. There is so much to learn out there and you can do it all as a family! Go To Page: 1 2
