Hey Everybody! Let's Swim

Summer has finally rolled in and the heat is beginning to settle in on us. My family loves this time of year. We can enjoy being outside longer, thanks to day light savings and to the tilt of the earth for summer time in the USA.

As we spend more time with each other and more time in the outdoors we find that we need a little cooling off in the 110 degree weather we have in the Southern California deserts. We hear the water calling our names. If you listen really carefully, I'm sure you'll hear your name called as well. We have the Pacific Ocean to the left of us and we have the beautiful water resorts of Palm Springs to the right of us. What a hard decision to make; the ocean or the resorts. Salt water mixed with seaweed (yum!) and sand in every possible place with a soft salty air breeze blowing or the water lapping in the pool near my beach lounge as the waiter comes to take my order for lunch and the beach towel guy brings me a fresh towel. Dad is out playing with the kids in the water as I sit and read my book, soaking up the sun.

Which choice do you think you'd make? I hear the words you might be muttering under your breath about the cost of the resort versus the FREE cost of the beach, but I'm here to offer some gentle advice for your family fun swimming adventures. We found our resort (yes, I call it ours because we are royalty when we are out there) about a year ago. We sat in our home dying from the 120 degree oven heat outside. Our A/C was going crazy just trying to keep up with the heat. I didn't feel like hauling my gear to the beach only to come home with more sand than we found on the beach and to still find sand in my hair and teeth three days later. I called a few of the big hotel resorts in our area and asked about prices for swimming for a day. They all told me "NO CHARGE, just come out for the day and relax. Let us pamper you!" They didn't need to beg me any longer. We were in the car within an hour headed to "our" resort.

When we arrived we walked right into the pool area. The kids jumped into the water while I found a nice lounge chair. Soon a waiter came over to see if we wanted to order drinks or food. We set up a running tab with him and all day we drank our drinks and had our lunch pool side. I was even surprised to see that the food was very reasonably priced and the drinks were yummy! Eight hours later, we closed our tab and jumped in the car to head home. It was such a pleasant day, my kids were begging for more the next week. We paid about the same price we would have if we'd gone to the beach and grabbed snacks for the cooler and a quick dinner on the way home, but this way sure beat the sand and salt water.
