Rainy Day People"It's raining it's pouring the old man is snoring. He bumped his head and he went to bed and he never got up in the morning." This was the chant that I awoke to the other morning (at least I woke up to it rather then being like the old man in the tune.) My kids were running around my bed trying to decide what to wear on a chilly, rainy day. It was Saturday and we didn't have to trudge around outside today. We could be home and stay cuddled up by the fire. But my children had other plans for me I found out soon enough. After wiping the sleep out of my eyes, I was glad to get up and put a warm breakfast on the table for two hungry children still running around in their pajamas (better than their underwear I figured). After breakfast they ran out the door as fast as they could. They wanted to feel the rain. They wanted to taste the rain. They wanted to dance in the rain. I watched out window as they played and realized I wanted to play with them. I forgot about my shoes, I forgot about my rain jacket. I simply wanted to enjoy the rain as much as my children seemed to. Luckily we had a warm rain for what should have been a winter day in February and we enjoyed the hour we spent running in the puddles and getting splashed by each other. My son stomped his feet as hard as he could and giggled with joy as the puddle came alive and showered water on him. My daughter was thrilled to know "Singing in the Rain" was not just a song. After that hour of fun we each took hot showers to warm our chilly bones and put on dry clothes. We had hot chocolate and toast for a snack. My daughter found board games from the hall closet and layed them out for our enjoyment. We spent the rest of the day just hanging out with each other and playing N64, watching videos, eating popcorn and we even ordered pizza to wind the day down (no anchovies though). It was one of the most fun days we've had in a long time and we didn't even have to spend tons of money or leave the comforts of our home. We just spent it as a family and savored the moments.
