This is a collaboration with Judy Justice of Women's self Defense, here at Suite 101. We both feel it's vital to be aware of self-defense, not only for women, but as a family. There are many ways for women to feel they can protect their children along with protecting themselves.
I interviewed Judy asking her what I need as a parent to expect from a class on self defense or what to look for in self-defense classes for the whole family. The information she gave is posted in her Suite 101 articles on self-defense and is packed with information that you don't want to miss. We want to make June the self-awareness and self-defense month for families. With the beginning of summer already upon us the thought of family safety comes to mind. Summer is a time that we are all outdoors. We are outside longer, due to daylights saving and we travel farther away from home for vacation time.
My husband and I decided to start our children in Tae Kwon Do classes. Not just for self-protection, but also for self-confidence and self-awareness. We had all sorts of questions to ask about what to expect or what to not expect in a class for children. Here is a little history on Tae Kwon Do and what to expect. Don't be worried about Karate or Tae Kwon Do turning your little angel into a violent person. It's the same adage that video games and TV shows are what is turning our children into violent people. You, as a parent, have to take some of the responsibility to take what your children see and learn and teach them correctly. Teach them values and ways that are right and wrong. You have to put it into perspective and turn their bright energy into a positive force. Keep things positive. One site that is posted on the Judy's self defense site is a test to check to see how at risk you are, or how vulnerable you may be. It will open your eyes to just what to look out for and what to be cautious of. You have got to take the test! With world wide violence at our fingertips through the media of the Internet or the TV or the radio, our children our surrounded at all times with images and pictures. Judy's article has some excellent links to sites that are very helpful in teaching and talking to our children. I strongly recommend you visit her site. It is chock full of wonderful info that would be useful for families with children. Go To Page: 1 2
