SPORTING MADNESS

O.K, O.K, this might seem like an odd idea for family fun, but I just have to write it because it is something we love to do as a family. We are sports nuts. I guess you could even call us sports fanatics. It must be the competitive spirit that we were born with and one of the major things that drew my husband and I together. We love sports. It's one of the many things we have in common and one area that we do not fight. (Unless, of course, the baseball tickets are given away.) We never fight over who watches too much Monday Night Football or the Basketball Playoffs. Our children even get involved with us. They sit and watch with us (or stand and cheer with us). It's truly a family event.

I think this goes back to my early childhood. Don't we always blame our childhood for our actions as adults? I blame my parents for getting me so involved in sports. We had season tickets to the Utah Stars games in the early 1970's held in the Salt Palace. Does anyone remember the "Utah Stars"? Not the WNBA, but the team that played in Utah before the Jazz came to play, long before Malone made his deliveries in the Delta Center. My parents also had season tickets to the college sports teams that were in the next town. We were a sporting family. My brothers all played little league, Pony league, High School and on to college sports. Attending games was a family event. When my brothers' teams made region playoffs held in other states we would travel with the team as a family and stay over night in hotels. Those memories are the best. Family pictures are worth more than gold when looking back at those days of family togetherness.

I won't push my kids into sports, only if they want too. I want them to want to enjoy it and want to do it. As much as I love sports, wanting to play is another matter. I'm not a great sports player, but I'm a great sports fan. (Fanatic is more the word)

SOOOOO, when the playoff's hit, our big screen TV becomes our screen to the world. We gather in the family room and pop our popcorn, drink our sodas and enjoy talking about the players, talking about the teams and best of all talking as a family. We converse. As it turns out, we have even gotten to be a little diverse in our family. Not every one likes the same teams or the same sport.
