A Year In The Life (of your family)

Where do our legends and myths come from? Where did Valentine's Day come from or the Easter Bunny, or even St. Patrick's day?

Since it's the beginning of the year and our family likes to calendar events in advance, I thought I'd do a list of different things that can be done for the whole family during these so called holidays, and what fun they are! Families are where the action is.

January: New Years:

February: Valentine's Day:

How about showing the family the finer things in life with a seven course meal, fine china and candles to boot? It can be easy with this little guide to help you out. It doesn't have to be fancy. For example, try spaghetti and meatballs with soup and salad and french bread. Flan for dessert is very special. Your whole family will love the idea that you spent time on them and actually stayed home to spend Valentine's Day with the ones you truly love.

March: St. Patrick's day:

This can be so much fun, especially with little kids around. I thought of Leprechauns . So many people have statues of them or have made them scary for kids. I wanted to bring something positive, like a happy experience of leprechauns, to my family's experience of St. Patrick's Day. I'm of Irish birth and wanted to bring some of my heritage to my kids. I absolutely love this festive time because of my heritage.

You could clean your kids' rooms for them. Make their beds, vacuum and dust. It has to be very noticeable to them that someone's been in their room. Leave a little money pouch of chocolate money (the kind at the candy store) on their dressers or under their pillows with a note saying the Leprechauns did them a favor and helped them out! My kids fell in love with leprechauns because of the little stories I'd tell that I've heard passed down from generations. We also love to watch the old Disney show staring Sean Connery, "Darby O'Gill and The Little People." It's a delight and usually on the Disney channel around this time of year. I talk about the family generations and why they left their beloved land of Ireland to sail to America. I want my kids to know their family history.

April: April Fools Day or Easter:

April Fool's Day can be a total hoot with everyone of all ages. Keep it simple and not annoying, but have fun with it! Have dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner. Short sheet the beds while everyone is out of the house. Put water in the milk carton, put salt in the sugar shaker and sugar in the salt shaker. Sometimes that can get wasteful with the food, but it's also a good laugh once a year! Just do some fun stuff for your family.
