THE SEASON OF THE FAMILYIt's Christmas time! I absolutely love this time of year! The sights, the sounds, the smells. What is your favorite smell, sound or sight? My mind is reeling with so many things to say. I am like a kid gearing up for the day that jolly man brings the gifts! I've just realized not to feel rushed during the season. People now days seem to get bent out of shape over the smallest things. People are running to the left and driving fast to the right and just plain talking as fast as they can. SLOW DOWN!!! Smell the season. Listen to the season. See the season. ENJOY the season. I found a fun idea on the Internet about an Advent calendar. It's up and running on Dec. 1st with great activities for each day and a saying for each day. Just drop by and visit everyday until Christmas day. Taking the family to the "NutCracker" is a tradition for many. The thought of spending hundreds of dollars on tickets and getting dressed up is not my husband's idea of Christmas, so I've compromised and brought it home. My kids love to dance to the scenes so we rent the movie the "NutCracker" and spend a family night watching it while we eat popcorn and drink our drinks. The kids dance with the dance scenes without interrupting anyone. I'll save teaching culture to them by taking them to the free Christmas concert series throughout our valley. There are many different choir groups or dance groups that have Christmas concerts. Look in your local newspaper under the entertainment section for dates and times. Some communities have community theatre's that do special Christmas plays that are fairly good priced for family attendance. Check into them. They are worth every moment spent there and nothing is better than filling your soul with good things during the Christmas season. Another activity you can do as a family is reading together. I have enjoyed collecting Christmas books the past few years and place them in a basket near one of my favorite reading chairs. My kids love to sit down and grab a book out of the basket and read it or have me read it to them. Each year I add just a few more to the collection. It's amazing all the wonderful new Christmas stories that are published. Some are as good as the classics, but nothing is as great as reading the classics to my children.
