HAVE A FUN and SAFE HALLOWEENAll you have to say to a child is "Halloween" and they squeal and jump up and down in the air. My son keeps asking me "how many more sleeps before it's Halloween?" I have to laugh and tell him a few more. Of course time is of no importance to him, all he cares about is dressing up and getting out to trick or treat. Do your kids keep changing their minds every five minutes of what they want to dress up as? Mine sure have. I can't get serious about doing costumes until a few days before. There is no way I'm going to spend hours on sewing a costume to only be told they want to be something else instead! As long as we can find a thrift store close by we are in business. Safety is the upmost in my mind. My children mean more to me than anything in this world and I'm sure I"m not the only parent that feels that way. It's important for Moms and Dads to take an active role in being responsible for each child's safety as they approach our doors on Halloween night. Asking our kids beforehand what they know will let us know what we need to teach them and what we need to reinfore to them about being safe on this night of all nights. If you happen to live in a rural area and going door to door isn't an option, here is one excellent suggestion. We did this as a church group and it worked so well, it's turned into a tradition. On Halloween we have our congregation meet at the church building and we decorate all our cars. We even dress up as families in a family theme and have contests for the best theme, but worst theme, the silliest and so forth. We have a parade for the kids to show off their costumes and we give awards to each and every child. It's more of a harvest celebration, but after the potluck dinner and a few games we have the children go trick or treating to each car just as if they are going door to door. Some cars have had scary music playing inside and once we even had a van have a spook alley through it. We went through the front and out the back and touched all sorts of wierd things and had a skeleton grab our feet as we walked past.
