A More Efficient Way to Clean

It may not seem too obvious, but you can save both time and money if you clean efficiently. I never gave it much thought until I came across several articles and books on the topic. Each author had his/her own recommended way to clean. I have taken the ideas I liked best from each, and changed others, to suit my needs. I'll share them here with you.

The biggest thing I learned is that I don't need to use a soft cleanser (you know the one) and sponge to clean everything. Besides saving money on cleanser, I have cut down my cleaning time tremendously just by changing the way I do this one thing. To clean countertops, etc., I now use an all-purpose spray cleaner and cotton-terry towels (purchased inexpensively in the auto department of a local discount store). I fold and refold the towel as I clean. If it gets too dirty, I grab a clean one. When I'm done cleaning I throw them all in the washer and they're ready for the next time I clean. Too easy!

Another time and money saver is using a feather duster instead of a cloth and spray each time you dust. Ostrich feather dusters (also available at your local discount store) really do work best. They are great for all those high places and spots where you have lots of knicknacks you don't want to move around each time you dust. The ostrich feather duster will catch and hold the dust, just be sure to stop quickly at the end of the item you are dusting to avoid flinging dust all over your house (speaking from experience!). When your feather duster begins to get covered with dust, simply give it a few firm bangs against the heel of your shoe down by the carpet and you will vacuum up that dust when you do your normal vacuuming. For this reason, it's important to vacuum after you dust if you use this method.

A shower squeegee has been a life-saver for me. I was hesitant to try this one out, but I figured the squeegee was cheap enough I could try it for a while. WOW! My shower has never looked better. It only takes a few seconds to wipe down the shower when you are done and the results are well worth it. I even convinced my husband to do it. I went through 3 squeegees, however, and I recommend that you use a good stiff one as opposed to simply a cool-looking one.
